About Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay, Ontario is a city of about 110,000 people located on the shores of Lake Superior. This is a land of natural beauty surrounded by the leading edge of the Boreal Forest and thousands of lakes, and encircled by ridges of mountains with ski hills and hiking/biking trails.

Despite the city’s size and distance from Toronto – or perhaps because of it – Thunder Bay is one of the most innovative health and health research clusters in Ontario. At the centre is the modern Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (opened 2004), located about 500 metres from Golf Links Community Clinic. It houses one of the few hospital-based cyclotrons in Canada, which is used for patient care as well as research at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute.

Thunder Bay is also home to a growing academic centre including Lakehead University (consistently named the top university in Canada for undergraduate research), the Western Campus of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, and Confederation College. There are opportunities for professional appointments at any of these institutions, as well as opportunities for clinical research with Health Research Institute scientists for physicians and other health professionals.

But really, practising in Thunder Bay is all about a lifestyle that can’t be beat. Commutes to the Clinic from within the city are about five to 15 minutes, depending on where you buy a house. You may choose to live semi-rural instead, where you can get a home with 2.5 to 40+ acres 10-25 minutes away (and, at a fraction of the price of a bungalow in Toronto). You can get it all in a natural setting where hiking, fishing, boating, biking, skiing, and almost any other outdoor activity you can imagine is less than a half-hour from your front door.

If you ever do need to get elsewhere, downtown Toronto is just an hour and a half away on Porter Airlines, serving Toronto City Airport. (Of course, flights to Pearson as well as other destinations are available, too.)
